Generally a pleasing copy. Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (ca 475-525), consul in 510, was imprisoned and later executed on the charges of plotting against Gothic rule during the reign of Theodoric. His Consolation of Philosophy, composed during his imprisonment, remains his best known work, an immensely popular work read and translated throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Waleys [Wallensis], Thomas (fl. 1318Ð1349), Dominican friar and theologian, joined the Dominican order in his youth and by 1318 was a bachelor of theology at Oxford. Waleys's surviving academic works... show him to have been an observant and witty man, with a growing interest in classical antiquity, fostered particularly by the access to rare books that his time in Bologna and Avignon provided. In Beryl Smalley's judgement, his attitude to the classics was more objective and less moralizing than that of his contemporary Petrarch. Learning to approach his texts Ôas a scholar, who has collated manuscripts and collected variantsÕ, Waleys Ôsteeped himself in primary sources and he gave exact referencesÕ (Smalley, 98, 100)."
