More Information: "Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (ca475-525), consul in 510, was imprisoned and later executed on the charges of plotting against Gothic rule during the reign of Theodoric.  His Consolation of Philosophy, composed during his imprisonment, remains his best known work, an immensely popular work read and translated throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance. "The literary fecundity of Boethius is astonishing, especially in view of his family life and exacting public duties. He wrote on education, science, philosophy, and theology, but he was above all a logician, a translator and a commentator...The sack and ecacuation of Rome in 546 may with some assurance be taken as the dividing line in Italy between the ancient and medieval cultures. Standing thus at the very end of civilization, Boethius may rightly be called an eminent founder of the Middle Ages and a figure of supreme importance in the history of Western thought," Ency. of Philosophy.     Index Aurel 4:442. Paris BN (R:200). EDIT 16: 2:2725. Not in Adams. Not in Schweiger. ISTC I:265 (1580 ed.). EDITcnce: 6585.
