    Description

Amos Andrew Parker. Trip to the West and Texas. Comprising a Journey of Eight Thousand Miles, Through New-York, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Louisiana and Texas, in the Autumn and Winter of 1834-5. Interspersed With Anecdotes, Incidents and Observations. Concord: White & Fisher, 1835. First edition. 12mo. 376 pp. Two woodcuts, inclusive of frontispiece. Original light brown cloth over boards. Upper third of backstrip missing, the lower portion held only by rear joint. Foxing throughout. Bookplate on front pastedown. Overall, in very good condition.

Parker, a New Hampshire editor, lawyer, and legislator, took it upon himself to explore the vastness of Texas and the West just prior to the Texas Revolution. During his travels along the Sabine to the Colorado River and back to San Felipe in late 1834, he took copious notes and wrote vivid and discerning descriptions of all he saw and experienced. The appendix includes a table of distances for each leg of the trip as well as an itemized list of expenses. Parker writes: "I was about five months on my journey, and the whole expense was two hundred dollars." Lacks the map added in the second edition. According to Jenkins (Basic Texas Books) this, the first edition, had a print run of five thousand copies.
