Description

William L. McCalla: Adventures in Texas, Chiefly in the Spring and Summer of 1840; with a Discussion of Comparative Character, Political, Religious and Moral; Accompanied by an Appendix, Containing an Humble Attempt to Aid in Establishing and Conducting Literary and Ecclesiastical Institutions with Consistency and Prosperity, upon the Good Old Foundation of the Favour of God our Saviour. Philadelphia: Printed for the Author, 1841. First edition. 16mo. 8, [13]-199 pages. Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth, title in gilt on front cover.

McCalla was a controversial Presbyterian clergyman who traveled by sea to Galveston and then to Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Goliad. The first sixty pages are devoted to an account of this journey and give valuable insight into his character and religious beliefs. The remainder of the book is turned over to his largely favorable views of Texas, particularly its morals and character.

Condition: Boards worn at the extremities; corners bumped and rounded; small areas of loss on the spine; front hinge broken causing the front board and portions of the text block to be loose; former owner's name on the front free endpaper; some toning and foxing to the preliminary and terminal pages, otherwise a very good copy.
