William Dean Howells. Niagara Revisited. Chicago: [1884]. First edition, originally suppressed with much of the print run destroyed.

    More Information:

William Dean Howells. Niagara Revisited. Chicago: D. Dalziel, [1884]. First edition. The uncommon "suppressed edition," one of only a few copies in existence. Quarto. [xiv], 12 pages. Illustrated in color. Publisher's color lithographic boards. Spine worn and chipped, boards worn and chipped (mainly at edges), some tears to endleaves, hinges starting, closed tear to title-page. Some foxing to text. A good copy of a very fragile book. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

The Fitchburg Railroad Company of Chicago bought the rights to reprint this brief sketch by Howells and republish it in this promotional pamphlet advertising their route to Niagara Falls. However, the railroad company failed to pay Howells for the rights as they had agreed, and he took legal action against them, forcing them to suppress this work and destroy the print run. "All but a few copies destroyed." (BAL 9615). As best as we can tell, no copy has appeared at auction since 1975, and OCLC lists only eight copies (besides this one) extant. See "Niagara Revisited. the Story of its Publication and Supression" by Rudolf and Clara M. Kirk in Essays in Literary History.
