Description

Western Expansion: Complete Set of Pre-Civil War Reports on Western Terrain and Fauna. "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for A Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Made Under the Direction of the Secretary of War, in [1853-55]." 12 volumes bound in 13, printed in Washington. Extensively illustrated with color lithograph plates of scenic views, black & white lithographs of geological, botanical & zoological subjects (including the hand-colored lithographs of birds), graphs & charts, folding maps, etc. Each volume measures 9.75" x 11.75". Six have marbled boards with ribbed leather spines. The other seven have green or brown embossed cloths covers and spines. Under the direction of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, this was the largest concerted effort to explore and map the Western frontier until that time, playing a large role in the completion of the transcontinental railroad in the years following the war. Four potential routes were surveyed, from a northern route terminating at the mouth of the Columbia River to a southern route running through Texas to San Diego. Superbly illustrated with color lithographs of the countryside and native peoples of the regions explored. The series of lithographic views presented to the world some of the first depictions of previously unexplored regions of the West, and some of its newly settled areas. The condition varies, ranging from fair to very good. We briefly summarize the overall condition of each: Vol. 1 (very fine with marbled boards, impressed "House of Rep's" at top of spine), Vol. 2 (good, embossed cloth cover, vertical separation of spine with one piece separated, but present), Vol. 3 (cloth, fair, spine faded, binding loose, contents appear to be complete but with some damp stains), Vol. 4 (cloth, spine and cloth covers in fair condition, contents appear complete with some damp stains), Vol. 5 (cloth, spine and cloth covers in fair condition, contents appear complete with some foxing and mildew), Vol. 6 (marbled boards, very fine with light drying out of spine), Vol. 7 (marbled boards, very fine with rubbed edges), Vol. 8 (marbled boards, very fine with rubbed edges), Vol. 9 (marbled boards, front cover detached, partial loss to title on spine, contents fine), Vol. 10 (marbled boards, front and back covers loose, spine in poor condition), Vol. 11 (cloth, binding poor with missing sections, contains many fold-out maps, appears to be complete, but not inventoried), Vol. 12-Part One (cloth, fair, loose boards, bumped corners, contents fine with scattered mildew), Vol. 12-Part Two (cloth, good, some tearing and wear to spine, contents very fine).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
