Limited to 100 Copies, Signed by LeaTom Lea. The Hands of Cantú. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1964. Autographed edition limited to 100 hand-signed copies signed by Tom Lea in his beautiful calligraphic style on a special limitation page bound in front. Octavo. 244 pages. Illustrated by the author and accompanied by a signed and dated print by Lea of his character, Gonzalo Duro. Mounted color frontispiece. Brown crushed levant by the Harcourt Bindery. Top edge gilt with gilt inner dentelles. A beautiful copy, fine in the original slipcase.
Lea's masterpiece is rarely offered for sale and was difficult to obtain even when it was first published. The publisher vastly oversubscribed the book and was forced to distribute copies via a lottery system thus incurring the wrath of those collectors and dealers who had prepaid their orders. Aside from the fact that it is a beautiful example of the binder's art, it is also a cornerstone of any collection of southwestern literature. This copy is particularly nice, exhibiting little, if any, wear and obviously well looked after.
