Description

Tom Lea. Peleliu Landing Including An Original Drawing From Lea's Original 1944 Sketchbook. El Paso: Carl Hertzog, 1945. Deluxe edition limited to 500 copies of which this is number 5, hand-numbered and signed by the author on introduction page bound in front. Quarto. 34 pages. Illustrated with ten of the author's original battle sketches. Includes the eight-page Life magazine color insert laid-in all copies of the deluxe edition. Bound in olive green herringbone twill cloth, the same material as Marine Corps combat dungarees, with titles printed in black on the front board. Tom Lea combat photograph used as endpapers. Page edges untrimmed. Slipcase.

This copy is sold with an original from Lea's original sketchbook laid-in. The drawing measures approximately 8.5" x 11 and is mounted in a folder under a tissue guard. The folder is annotated and signed by Lea: "From my sketchbook - Peleliu - September 1944 / Tom Lea". The drawing is captioned "Advance / The Blockhouse of the Dead". This same drawing appears facing page 24 in Peleliu Landing.

As a war correspondent for Life magazine, Lea was present for the first 32 hours of the Marine's assault on Peleliu Island. His text and sketches brilliantly capture the terror and shock experienced by the Marines in those first few critical hours. Hertzog's choice of type face, paper and binding is integral to Lea's narrative and sketches and one finds it difficult to image that one could stand without the other. Certainly this work must be counted as one of Hertzog's greatest achievements.

Condition: Some modest toning; trivial bumps to upper corners, otherwise a fine copy in a very good slipcase.
