One of Twenty-Six Lettered Copies, Signed by Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt. The Complete Writings of Theodore Roosevelt. Philadelphia: Gebbie and Company, 1902-1903.

Author's Edition, one of twenty-six lettered copies, this being copy number "J." Signed in Volume I on the inserted limitation page by Theodore Roosevelt; also signed by the president and secretary of Gebbie and Company. Twenty-two octavo volumes. Each volume has plates in two states and descriptive tissue guards inserted throughout, as well as inserted limitation pages. Most frontispieces signed by the original artist on the first state.

Publisher's fine binding of full crushed red morocco, covers decoratively ruled in a star-and-comet motif with gilt-eagle-and-stars cornerpieces, spine tooled in eagles and lettered in gilt in gilt-ruled compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and elaborate turn-ins with floral motif and gilt eagle cornerpieces, dark green levant morocco doublures with elaborate gilt stamping of the author's stylized initials surrounded by vines, floral cornerpieces, and eagles at top and bottom, marbled paper free endpapers. All edges gilt. Spines somewhat darkened, some intermittent soiling to spines, joints, lower edges and corners quite rubbed. A few headcaps mildly chipped. Marbled front free endpapers have glue residue from bookplate, with many bookplates still present, although loose. Overall, a very good copy of this finely made set.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
