Theodore Roosevelt. Message of the President of the United States Communicated to the Two Houses of Congress at the Beginning of the Second session of the Fifty-Seventh Congress. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1902. First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author on the first blank: "To / Lt Dan Moore / from his cousin / Theodore Roosevelt / Jan 6th 1905." Octavo (9.5 x 6 inches; 240 x 152 mm.). 60, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's green cloth, boards and spine ruled in gilt, front board lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Cloth spine somewhat rubbed and bumped at edges; some rubbing to edges of binding; corners bumped; mild occasional foxing, thumbsoiling in text. Very good. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.

More Information: Related by marriage, Moore was one of Roosevelt's aides during his first administration. In 1905, during a friendly boxing match with Roosevelt, Moore struck Roosevelt a blow that caused blindness in one eye -  however, it wasn't until 1917 that Moore discovered that the blow struck twelve years ago had caused such damage: "But could you ask for any better proof of the man's sportsmanship than the fact that he never told me what I had done to him, never told anybody else that I know of - at least, it never got around to me till I saw in the papers the other day that he had said that he lost the sight of his eye while boxing with a captain of artillery who was his aide. He didn't name anybody then, but I knew that he must have meant me, for I happen to have been the only boxing aide he had who was in the artillery." This book was inscribed the year of the fateful boxing match.
