DescriptionThe Texas Almanac for 1861 With Statistics, Historical and Biographical Sketches &c., Relating to Texas. Galveston: Richardson & Co. (The Galveston News), . Octavo. [iii], 336 pages. Illustrations, and ads. Later brown cloth binding retaining the original printed wrappers. Gilt lettering to spine.
The Galveston News began publishing the annual Texas Almanac in 1857. This edition from 1861 gives a comprehensive snapshot of the state of Texas on the eve of the Civil War. Between the advertising sections which feature gun retailers, attorneys, and the purveyors of liver pills, can be found a history of the state, "laws of the Eighth Legislature condensed," an article on sheep-raising, and "the friendly Indians of Trinity river." Also included are steamship and stagecoach schedules, with an article on the coming railroad industry. Raines states: "These Almanacs published for the first time much of the original materials for a history of Texas and are recognized today as the great depositories of valuable information, historical and miscellaneous, as to Anglo-American Texas. No collection of Texana complete without Richardson's Texas Almanacs."
Condition: Binding a bit shelf worn; wrappers with some modest foxing but the contents are generally very clean and in very good condition.
