Texas: COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSIONER OF INDIAN AFFAIRS, AND OTHER DOCUMENTS, IN RELATION TO THE INDIANS IN TEXAS. 30th Cong., 1st Sess. S. Rep. Com. 171: 1848. 52pp, disbound, Very Good to Near Fine. __ "A vitally important document not noted by Raines or Field." Gilcrease-Hargrett. It provides a first-hand account of customs of the Texas Indian tribes, and of contacts between them and the white settlers. This document consists of communications between W. Medill, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, and Robert Neighbors, his special Indian Agent to carry out the U.S.'s treaty with the Indians. Neighbors is enjoined to prevent contact between the Indians and the white settlers, and particularly to avoid the introduction of liquor among the Indians. But his job is rendered difficult by the persistent and aggressive spread of whites to all parts of the Texan domain, and the consequent incursion upon territory of Comanches, Arapahoes, Kiowas, and others. The Texas Emigration & Land Company pressured Neighbors to allow settlement in Indian territory, and he writes about this as well. Many descriptions of Neighbors's contacts with the tribes, and his observations of their customs and social organization, are included. Particularly grisly activities of the Tonkaways, involving cannibalism, are described. FIRST EDITION. Gilcrease-Hargrett 364.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
