Samuel C. Reid, Jr. The Scouting Expeditions of McCulloch's Texas Rangers; or, the Summer and Fall Campaign of the Army of the United States in Mexico - 1846; Including Skirmishes with the Mexicans, and an Accurate Detail of the Storming of Monterrey; also, the Daring Scouts at Buena Vista; together with Anecdotes, Incidents, Descriptions of Country, and Sketches of the Lives of the Celebrated Partisan Chiefs, Hayes, McCulloch, and Walker. Philadelphia: John E. Potter and Company, [1859]. Later printing of the 1847 first edition. 12mo. 251, [1], [1]-4 publisher's catalog pages. Twelve plates called for (per Jenkins), this copy having none. Two-page map. Roster of killed and wounded in the battle of Monterey. Publisher's original cloth with decorations printed in black on the boards and titles stamped in gilt on the spine.

The author, having served with the Texas Rangers under Jack Hays and Ben McCulloch, provides an insightful, first-hand account of his time in the Rangers. John Jenkins, in his Basic Texas Books, writes that Reid "understood and sympathized with the attitude of the rangers. He does not hide their violence but neither does he condemn it. His chief complaints are against the restraints imposed by higher command [...]. Reid's book is best at the anecdotal level, giving one of the clearest surviving accounts of life in camp, scouts, forays, skirmishes, sprees, and practical jokes. The Texans were out for vengeance, without doubt, but they were also in this first American foreign war for fun, and of vengeance and fun Reid gives us aplenty."

Condition: Boards soiled and well-worn at the extremities; corners and spine ends frayed; short tears on the edges of the spine; marginalia on the front and rear endpapers; lower corner of page 115-116 torn, else a good copy.
