Rev. Samuel Parker. Journal of an Exploring Tour Beyond the Rocky Mountains, Under the Direction of the American Board of Commissions for Foreign Missions, in the Years 1835, '36, and '37. Ithaca: Published by the author, 1840. Second edition. Octavo. xvi, [17]-400 pages. One engraved plate "Basaltic Formations on the Columbia River". Large folding map bound in front "Map of Oregon Territory 1838". Contemporary blind-stamped black cloth with titles stamped in gilt on the spine.
Condition: Very good. Modest wear to boards with some light abrasions on the corners and small section of loss at the head of the spine. Preliminary and terminal endpapers browned with moderate scattered foxing throughout. Offsetting to the page facing the engraved illustration. Text block remains tight and the map, though a bit cockled is in excellent condition.

    More Information:

"Parker accompanied a fur-trading party, in 1835, from Council Bluffs to Walla Walla" - Graff. The second edition has the same map as the 1838 first edition, which was the "earliest map of the Oregon interior with a pretense of accuracy." Wheat states that the map "represented a real advance, and it was made from personal observations."
