Association CopyR[ichard] L[ee] T[uberville] Beale. History of the Ninth Virginia Cavalry in the War Between the States. Richmond: B. F. Johnson Publishing Company, 1899. First edition. Octavo. [1-6], 7-192 pages. Engraved portrait of the author used as the frontispiece. Rosters. Publisher's original brick red cloth with titles stamped in gilt on the front board and spine.
R. L. T. Beale was the commander of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, serving with them until the war's end. He was considered an able commander and led the regiment through engagements including Gettysburg, Brandy Station and Petersburg, among others. He was wounded and captured at Appomattox Station on April 9, 1865. This copy with handwritten on the front free endpaper in pencil "Gen Stith Bolling's Book". Bolling's name appears in the roster of Company G of the Regiment as Orderly Sergeant. He has hand-annotated many of that company's men's names with numbers, the meaning of which is not known. Bolling eventually attained the rank of Captain in the regiment. He was wounded six times during the war. He became active in Virginia politics after the war, as well as being the Brigadier General of the Virginia militia. A superb association copy.
"An excellent personal and descriptive narrative of cavalry operations in the East; the discerning nature of the book makes it a valuable research tool for all aspects of the war" Nevins I, page 56. HOWES B-274, "aa." Dornbusch II, 1236.
