The Rare Second Edition of Biddle's Young Carpenter's Assistant

Owen Biddle. The Young Carpenter's Assistant; or, a System of Architecture, Adapted to the Style of Building in the United States. Philadelphia: Johnson and Warner, 1810.

Second edition. Quarto. [62] pages. With forty-four engraved plates of architectural views and construction diagrams, two of which fold out. 9.5 x 7.75 inches. Glossary. Complete.

Contemporary full calf, spine ruled in gilt. Front board nearly detached, rear board detached but present, joints split, cords visible, boards worn, faint ink notations on front cover. Text soiled, dampstained, and worn at edges with some chipping, folding plates torn (two panels of plate XLI entirely torn from base of plate, yet present, plate XLIV almost entirely torn at all joints). Binding cords gone, holes visible. Neat contemporary ink notation on front free endpaper. A fair copy.

Even though the condition of this copy is rough, this is an important book. It is the second book on architecture written and published in the United States. Only one other copy of the second edition has been at auction in the last thirty years.
