Smithwick was born in 1808 in North Carolina, trained as a blacksmith, and moved to Texas in 1827. For the next 34 years, Smithwick collected observances of the people, places, and events of note in the state. He served through the war for Texas Independence, and later became a Ranger, living for awhile with the Comanche, learning their language, and representing them in treaty negotiations with the Texan government in 1838. Smithwick claims to have been the man who forged the first replica Bowie knife, based on the knife that became famous after the Sandbar Duel of 1827. The book contains anecdotes of such important figures as James Bowie, Sam Houston, Stephen Austin, David G. Burnet, Gail Borden, Padre Michael Muldoon, R.M. Williamson, and others.
