Native Americans: 1832 "Trail of Tears" Congressional Report. 15 pp. (8vo) disbound, with some detached leaves. "22d Congress, 1st Session. Doc. No. 172. Ho. of Reps. Country for Indians West of the Mississippi. Letter from the Secretary of War, Transmitting A Copy of a Report made by Isaac McCoy, upon the subject of the country reserved for the Indians west of the Mississippi." A Baptist missionary among the Indians of the Midwest, McCoy advocated "Indian removal" from the eastern US to reservations in present-day Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma, where, he hoped (in vain) Native Americans would be "unmolested" by white settlers. This coincided with the forced-removal of Cherokees from Georgia ordered by President Andrew Jackson in defiance of a Supreme Court ruling. McCoy spent ten years surveying boundaries of possible reservations for more than 20 tribes. Here, McCoy describes his early surveying efforts on behalf of the Cherokee, Creek and Pawnee tribes and the government vaccination program which helped to stem a smallpox epidemic. He also lauds the Indians' self-reliance in accomplishing the move prior to receiving the promised government assistance, setting up farming settlements which "... appear little inferior to most new settlements of white people upon our frontiers." Vermin-related loss to upper right corner with scattered chipping, else very good.
