The first English edition of Lewis & Clark

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Travels to the Source of the Missouri River and across the American Continent to the Pacific Ocean. Performed by Order of the Government of the United States, in the Years 1804, 1805, and 1806. London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814.

4to (286 x 222 mm). Half-title. Folding engraved map after Clark by S. Lewis, 5 other engraved maps and plans on 3 plates (light spotting to engravings, light offsetting to folding map and to facing text pages); with 4 pp. publisher's advertisements at front, and 16 pp. publisher's ads at end (dated March 1814), both octavo format. Later paper-backed boards to style preserving original printed spine label, paper edges uncut; quarter morocco folding case.

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF THE AUTHORIZED ACCOUNT OF "THE MOST IMPORTANT WESTERN EXPLORATION" (Howes). Published the same year as the official Philadelphia edition, this edition was edited by Thomas Rees from the American sheets. Apart from the omission of the American preface, the appendix, and Jefferson's "Life of Captain Lewis," Rees states that, "the only liberty that has been taken with the language, has been merely the correction of a few inadvertent grammatical or typographical errors" (p. xiv). The English edition's preface by Rees does include Jefferson's "Message on the Subject of this Expedition" of 19 February 1806 (pp. viii-ix) and an extract from Lewis's "Fort Mandan" letter of "17" [i.e. 7] April 1805 to Jefferson (pp. x-xii). The extremely important map was printed on heavier paper in this edition, "a better printing job than the American edition" (Best of the West).

Condition: Spine rubbed; original spine label browned and chipped. Some very minor pale spotting; light offsetting from plates onto facing text pages; some browning to deckle edges; small paper flaw/hole in lower margin of zz3; short wormtrack in blank lower margin in quires 3R-3X; occasional minor pale spotting or toning to text. Folding map with some offsetting; minor foxing; one minor split at fold on lower margin. Some light spotting to engravings, with some offset on facing text.
