Matilda Charlotte Houstoun. Hesperos: or, Travels in the West. London: John W. Parker, 1850. First edition. Two small 8vo volumes. viii, 293; viii, 279 pp. Rebound with tan cloth over boards, using the original leather title label with gilt lettering on spine.

The British Mrs. Houstoun returns to North America, this time for a lengthy tour from Halifax to the "Mexican archipelago" and includes three chapters on Texas. Houstoun comments on the changes to the region from her last visit of five years previous. She notes the large numbers of Germans flooding into Galveston; remarking, "these unfortunate emigrants have come out with the intention of settling in the German colony called 'New Braunfels,' which is being established in the north-west part of Texas. The section of the country in which this colony is situated, cannot, I believe, be surpassed, in regard to climate, by any country in the world; but it is very much out of the way, the first settlers having placed themselves as far from a market as possible [...]" (pp. 110-111).

Condition: With toning to original endpapers; interior pages remain bright. Dealer's notes on front endpapers.
