    Association Copy from MacKinlay Kantor to His Editor, William Targ and with ALS

    MacKinlay Kantor. Andersonville. Cleveland: World Publishing, [1955]. First edition. Limited to 1000 numbered and signed copies. Association copy, inscribed by Kantor to his editor, William Targ: "To Bill Targ / who believed and helped / from the start / my thanks, my affection - / MacKinlay Kantor. / 8th Sept. 1955". Octavo. 767 pages. Publisher's cloth with gilt titles. Mild toning along spine with a touch of rubbing to spine ends. With Targ's bookplate to front pastedown. Held in publisher's somewhat rubbed and splitting slipcase. Near fine. Also included in this lot is an autograph letter signed from Kantor to Targ on Kantor's letterhead, presenting Targ with the red pencil Kantor used during the writing of Andersonville. Single leaf letter measures 7 x 4.5 inches. Letter and pencil are professionally framed and glazed together to overall measurements of 14 x 11.5 inches.

    More Information: Letter reads, "25 May 1955 / Dear Bill- / I thought maybe you'd / like to have this red pencil- / used exclusvely throughout / the entire writing of Andersonville / for checking historical notes. / etc. etc. It served well; and / sometimes it was lost, but I / always found it again! / Affections- / Mack".
