Goodwin, S. Manship, 1698. First English translation, "Tonson" issue. Two volumes in one. Octavo (7.37 x 5 inches; 187.2 x 127 mm). Frontispiece, [22], 243, [1], [32], 184 pages. Illustrated with fold out maps and plates. Two known editions appeared in 1698, this is the "Tonson" issue, with the first line of the printers on the title-page ending in "Tonson" and with the alterations of the page numbers on the plates. However, this copy is missing one folding map and one folding plate from part I and the last section after part II, pp. 185-228, titled An Account of Several New Discoveries in North America. Part II table of contents with misprints, chapter XXXII incorrectly listed at page 123, actually page 132, and chapter XXXVII incorrectly listed at page 195, actually page 175. Tooled and blind-stamped leather over boards with later crushed red morocco spine label, tooled in blind and lettered in gilt, rebacked with original spine laid down, corners refreshed. Corners bumped, moderate edgewear, somewhat worn. Modern endpapers moderately soiled, bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Bookplate bearing "Sir John Anstruther of that ilk Baronet Coat of Arms" to title page verso; later ink ownership and stamp to part I title page verso, stamp to [A3] recto, stamp to p. [244], and part II p. 184. Text block moderately foxed and soiled, unevenly toned throughout. Housed in custom quarter brown morocco and brown cloth slipcase with cloth chemise, gilt-lettered spine and five raised bands; minor edgewear, minor soiling, somewhat rubbed. Good.
