Joseph Nimmo, Jr. Treasury Department. Report on the Internal Commerce of the United States. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1885. First edition. 8vo. xxiii Index to Executive Documents, vi contents (misbound between xvi and xvii of the index of Executive Documents, [1]-562 pages. Errata slip. Five folded lithograph maps with original color, including the important "The Range and Ranch Cattle Area of the United States 1884". Two additional maps "The Principal Transportation Line West of Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans", and "Principal Transportation Lines East of the Mississippi". Contemporary brown leather with titles stamped in gilt on morocco spine labels.Adams notes: "This book is held to be among the most important of the 'big four' cattle books..." Howes writes: "Contributed to by cattle experts, statistically documented, the unrivalled source for the period." The report on the cattle industry occupies pages 95-562.
Condition: Modest shelf wear to edges of the boards; professional restoration to spine to repair chipping; top and bottom boards have been reattached. Library stamp on the front free endpaper; maps with splits in the folds and closed tears, front and back endpapers have heavy toning at edges. Interior pages remain bright and the entire volume in very good condition.
