Holmes, Thomas Moran, H.H. Nichols, and photographer John Karl Hillers. Contemporary three-quarter morocco over maroon buckram. Titles lettered in gilt on the front board and spine. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Binding scuffed at the corners; front joint cracked causing the spine panel to be loose on one edge; contents lightly toned, else very good condition.
This rare volume is a narrative of John Wesley Powell's diaries of his exploration of the Colorado and Green rivers in 1868 and 1872. John Wesley Powell (1834 - 1902) was a United States soldier, geologist, explorer of the American West, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. Research indicates that only five copies of this volume have been auctioned in the past 30 years.
