    Description

John W. Forney. What I Saw in Texas. Philadelphia: Ringwalt & Brown, [1872]. First edition. Octavo. [3-5] 6-92 pages. Wood-engraved vignettes and text illustrations, either unattributed or signed in print by Crosscup & West or F.B. Schell, five full-page engravings including mounted wrapper and untitled map. Original lilac pictorial wrapper featuring a montage of Texas scenes mounted on paper covered boards. Brown cloth spine.

John W. Forney (1817-1888), also known as John Wein, John Wien, and John Weiss, was a Philadelphia journalist who became heavily involved in politics, serving at various times as a surveyor of the port of Philadelphia, Clerk of the House, and Secretary of the Senate. He was also important as a newspaper publisher, although he switched political sides several times. This work resulted from Forney's interest in and friendship with various railroad entrepreneurs. Forney's account was published to spur a subsidy by Congress to the Texas and Pacific Railroad.

Condition: Wrapper chipped and with minor loss at the edges; wear to the edges of the boards and spine ends. Interior near fine.
