John N. Edwards. Shelby's Expedition to Mexico. An Unwritten Leaf of the War. Kansas City: Kansas City Times Steam Book and Job Printing House, 1872. First edition. Octavo. 139 pages. Original blind-stamped brown cloth with title stamped in gilt on the front board. Kansas City Times advertisement used as front pastedown; Kansas City Lithographing Company advertisement used as rear pastedown.

The scarce original edition. This is the only history by a participant giving an account of the ill-fated expedition of 1000 Confederates led by Shelby to join Maximilian, then on his tottering Mexican throne.

Condition: About very good. Boards scuffed with minor damp damage; small splits in the joints; some loss of gilt to the titles on the front board; front hinge cracked but holding; pages toned along the edges but generally internally clean.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
