John C. Duval. Early Times in Texas or the Adventures of Jack Dobell. Dallas: Tardy Publishing Company, 1936. First edition. Octavo. xxiv, 284 pages. Illustrated by Jerry Bywaters. Edited by Mabel Major and Rebecca W. Smith. Publisher's original orange cloth with titles stamped in gilt on the front board and spine. With the rare dust jacket, also illustrated by Bywaters..

Jenkins calls Duval's work the most literate of all 19th century Texas memoirs. Originally published in 1892, Jenkins holds this later edition to be the best. The editors state that Duval's adventures after his escape from Goliad made Duval seem the Robinson Crusoe of Texas. .

Condition: Very good. Some paper remnants from the dust jacket stuck to the front board; slight toning to contents; former owner's bookplate mounted to front pastedown; jacket with minor closed tears along the edges and a 1" x 1" portion missing at the top of the spine.

Reference: Jenkins, Basic Texas Books 51G.
