Description

Signed Presentation Copy of the First Printing
of Harris's Stories of Georgia - "The only
extensive revision ever made in a book by
    Joel Chandler Harris"

Joel Chandler Harris. Stories of Georgia. New York: American Book Company, 1896. First edition, first printing, with "W. P. 1" on the verso of the title-page (BAL 7136, "Deposited Oct. 20, 1896"). Also published by D. Appleton and Company under the title Georgia from the Invasion of De Soto to Recent Times as part of the series Stories from American History (BAL 7137, "Deposited Nov. 7, 1896"). Signed presentation copy, inscribed by the author in ink on the front flyleaf: "With the regards / of / Joel Chandler Harris / [flourish]." Octavo (7.25 x 4.9375 inches; 184 x 126 mm.). 315, [1 (of 5), publisher's advertisements] pages (the last two leaves of advertisements have been cut away). Numerous text illustrations by A. I. Keller, Guy Rose, B. W. Clinedinst, and others. Original reddish-brown vertically-ribbed cloth with front cover ruled in blind and decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt; back cover ruled and decoratively stamped in blind; and spine ruled and lettered in gilt (now mostly lost). Linen-weave endpapers printed in gold, cream, and brown in a floral pattern and crossed rules.
This copy is in poor condition. The binding is worn; the cloth is faded from dampstaining on the back cover and spine, and frayed at the corners. The textblock has separated from the binding. The paper is becoming brittle, with several leaves chipping at the edges, including the free endpapers; two-inch tear into the text from the outer margin of pages 227/228; pages 239/240 with loss at the edges from chipping; a few additional short marginal tears, not affecting text. A few scattered fox marks or stains; offsetting and/or bleedthrough from some of the ink annotations.
