    James L. Rock and W. I. Smith. Southern and Western Texas Guide for 1878. St. Louis: A. H. Granger Publisher, 1878. First edition. Octavo. [7]-282 pages. Lacking frontispiece portrait of Col. Thomas W. Pierce, the dedicatee. Illustrations in the text, and with the large folding color map at the rear (25" x 19"), map is two-sided, with Texas on one side and the U.S. and Texas on the other. Map has become detached and is laid-in front. Publisher's green cloth with a double rule border stamped in blind on the covers, and lettered and decoratively stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine.

    Condition: Ex-library with only a few marks including a small library label on the lower spine, Essex Institute ex-libris on front pastedown, scattered small library blind stamps and a small ink stamp on the title page; boards generally clean with a couple of damp spots on the front board; wear at the spine ends; front hinge broken, rear starting; map detached and having many splits in the fold; lacking frontispiece, as noted, else a very good copy.
