James H. Smith. Eulogium on the Life and Character of Thomas S. Grimke, Delivered March 10, 1835, According to Appointment Before the Literary and Philosophical Society of South-Carolina. Charleston: Printed by J. S. Burges, 1835. First Edition. 32pp. Disbound. Light scattered foxing. Very good.

More Information: With a bilibography of Grimke's pamphlet writings. This is detailed biography of the life and character of one of the most interesting men produced by South Carolina. As Smith notes, "In this political opinions, he differed widely, and on many points, from a large portion of his fellow citizens," particularly in his opposition to slavery and Nullification, and his adherence to the Union. However, Smith hastens to say, Grimke was never a "visionary fanatic." Sabin 82791. II Turnbull 355. (3947)
