J[unius]. E. Wharton. History of the City of Denver From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time. To Which is Added a Full and Complete Business Directory of the City. Denver: Byers & Dailey, Printers, [1909]. Reprint of 1866 first edition, reproduced by D. O. Wilhelm. Octavo (7.5 x 4.625 inches; 192 x 117 mm.). 184 pages. Full-page facsimiles on verso of each leaf. Bound in modern one-quarter red morocco over blue striped cloth-covered boards; spine tooled in silver and blue with six raised bands. Original blue printed wrappers laid on stiff paper and bound in. All edges trimmed. A bit of shelf and joint wear to binding; a touch of discoloration to cloth at upper edges of boards. Edges of text block toned and slightly rubbed; public library stamp at top. Very good.

"Rarest of Colorado local histories; first of this city" (Howes.) "Among connoisseurs of Rocky Mountain lore, this work has long been esteemed as one of the most-to-be-desired books printed in the Territory. As the pioneer history of the region it ranks historically as one of the veritable nuggets of western literature, affording a contemporary record of the earliest emigration and the gold 'strikes'; of the beginning of the town, with personal observations on its first settlers; of the desperadoes and adventurers, their duels, murders and executions; the disasters of flood and fire; the Indian outrages and wars that led to the Chivington massacre; etc." (Eberstadt 135:267.) Graff 4617; Howes W303; Streeter Sale 2172.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
