    J. Marvin Hunter. Pioneer History of Bandera County: Seventy-five Years of Intrepid History. Bandera: Hunter's Printing House, [1922]. First edition. Inscribed by the author on the second free front endpaper: "To Mrs. Lee Rhodes / With the compliments / and best wishes of / The Author". Octavo. 287; [4] "index to contents" pages. Illustrated with photographs. Red cloth with titles lettered in black.

A collection of entertaining sketches of people and events that shaped the history of Bandera County in the Texas Hill Country. In a prickly review of this book that appeared in the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, E. W. Winkler posits that Hunter's work is not a true county history and that it "does not fulfill the expectations raised by the title. It is not a history; it is a collection of biographical sketches and other isolated incidents pertaining to Bandera County during the years between 1852 and 1892. The biographical data and the other material have value for local history, and the compiler's enthusiasm and industry in collecting and publishing them merits the support of those for whom in the first instance the book is intended. But the history of Bandera County remains to be written." Hunter, a resident of Bandera County and author of the acclaimed and important Trail Drivers of Texas, wrote several subsequent histories of Bandera County, this one unknown to Jenkins and not included in Cracker Barrel Chronicles.

Condition: Light soiling and spotting to boards; slightly bumped corners; wear at the spine ends; end papers a bit cockled; otherwise a better than very good copy of this rare book.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
