J. Evetts Haley. The Heraldry of the Range. Canyon (Texas): Panhandle-Plains Historical Society (Carl Hertzog), 1949. First edition with a long inscription by Haley on the front free endpaper to noted Dallas book reviewer and collector, Lee Milazzo, in which Haley gives the genesis of the book; and with a long inscription on the colophon page by Carl Hertzog to Milazzo. With an undated cowboy-themed Christmas card from the book's illustrator, Harold Bugbee, laid-in. Quarto. [1-4], 5-35 pages. Illustrated by H. D. Bugbee. Publisher's original cloth with titles and vignette lettered in gilt on the front board. Fore-edge untrimmed. Dust jacket. Dallas Morning News writer Paul Crume wrote of Haley's work: "The Heraldry of the Range doesn't properly belong to the body of his [Haley] work. It is a bookmaker's item, really, done in sepia and black by the incomparable Carl Hertzog of El Paso, and the growing number of collectors who admire Hertzog's work will probably seek it out." Haley's long inscription in this book gives a brief chronology of the book's stories from their intended purpose as advertising mediums for Standard Oil's Shamrock brand. Hertzog's inscription contains talks about editing Haley's prose to fit the 2 1/3 page limit and speaks of the book's binding, writing, in part: "I forget the factory name of the cloth but I renamed it "Hereford Homespun". The endpapers & jacket are just wrapping paper...". A unique copy with association to the author, binder and illustrator.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
