Inscribed to Artist Frank B. Hoffman

    J. Evetts Haley. Charles Goodnight Cowman & Plainsman. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, The Riverside Press Cambridge, 1936. First edition. A most special copy inscribed to noted Taos art colony artist Frank B. Hoffman. Featuring an original Harold D. Bugbee illustration of a small herd of buffalo and inscribed "To Frank B. Hoffman / whose work I have admired, / and whose friendship I have enjoyed / for more than twenty five years. / H. D. Bugbee / June 1949"; and inscribed by the author on the half-title page "And this copy of "Charles Goodnight Cowman and Plainsman", / is further inscribed for / Frank Hoffman, / great artist and helpful / friend, by the author, / J. Evetts Haley / June 25, 1949." Octavo. xiii, [2, maps], [1]-485 pages. Illustrations in text by Harold D. Bugbee. Publisher's original tan cloth with titles printed in brown on the front board and spine. Dust jacket.

Reese, Six Score 53: "Best biography of a cowman ever written. Goodnight's career spanned the history of the development of West Texas, from Indian fighting to oil wells. Goodnight, while not the largest cattleman in Texas, was undoubtedly the most important.... Haley's beautifully written biography, perhaps his best book, is an ample vehicle for a mighty figure, and is a classic of American biography."

Condition: Very good in a fair dust jacket. Modest shelf wear to the boards. Light toning to the preliminary and terminal endpapers. Dust jacket with areas of loss, chipping and wrinkling.
