DescriptionIsaac I. Stevens. Campaigns of the Rio Grande and of Mexico. With Notices of the Recent Work of Major Ripley. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1851. First edition. Octavo. [vi], -108, 4 publisher's catalog pages. Original printed wrappers.
Isaac Stevens, a soldier in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, also, between these conflicts, served as the first governor of Washington Territory. While serving in the Corps of Engineers during the Mexican-American War, Major Stevens saw action at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Palo Alto, etc. When Major R. S. Ripley published his two-volume military history, The War with Mexico, Stevens took exception with much of Ripley's analysis, and decided to issue his own narrative.
Condition: Modest staining to wrappers; contemporary owner's name in ink and contemporary book store ink stamp on the front wrapper; modest chipping to the edges of the back wrapper; contents with light to moderate foxing throughout, occasional damp staining and a few creased pages but otherwise a very good copy of this work rarely found retaining the original wrappers.
