Description

Hinton Rowan Helper. COMPENDIUM OF THE IMPENDING CRISIS OF THE SOUTH. New York: 1860. 214, [2 publ. advts] pp. Bound in contemporary half morocco and marbled boards [rubbed]. Several blindstamps, else Very Good. An abbreviated version of Helper's Impending Crisis of the South. "Unexpectedly in 1857 appeared a forcible appeal to that great majority of Southern whites who owned no slaves." Nevins Emergence of Lincoln 210. This white North Carolina author dedicated the book to the non-slaveholding whites of the South. "With the inflaming scalpel of sectional comparison Helper probed beneath the Southern skin. By census reports, State figures, and letters from mayors he tried to show the vast superiority of the free North in wealth, trade, production, libraries, education, churches, and literature. Slavery, he exclaimed, was ruining the South. Particularly was it ruining the poorer whites, a people who in 'deplorable ignorance and squalid poverty' seemed to him below the serfs of Russia. Id. at 213. "Helper wasted no sympathy on the slaves; in fact, he called stridently for their deportation...But his attack on slavery was particularly alarming to the South because he appealed to class divisions between the slaveholding and the non-slaveholding whites." Potter Impending Crisis 387. Howes H400. Sabin 31270.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
