Harley True Burton. A History of the J A Ranch. A Thesis, Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts, June, 1927. Austin: Press of Von Boeckmann-Jones Company, 1928. First edition. 8vo. [i-x], [1], 147 pages. Three photographic plates including a portrait of Charles Goodnight used as the frontispiece. Map of the J A Ranch. Original red cloth over boards with titles stamped in gilt on the front board and spine.

The J A ranch was the oldest ranch in the Texas Panhandle, founded by Charles Goodnight and John Adair. Burton does an admirable job of chronicling the ranch's history through the early part of the 20th Century. Though Burton's book has been reprinted, first editions rarely find their way to market.

Condition: Boards worn at the corners and spine ends; scattered insect damage to the spine; outline a label on the lower spine; Library of Congress label mounted to front pastedown; considerable underlining and marginalia in ink throughout, else a solid copy in very good condition.
