With a Handsome Fold-Out Map of the Island of Barbados, Circa 1750

Griffith Hughes. The Natural History of Barbados. In Ten Books. London: Printed for the Author, 1750. First edition. Folio. [xxiv], 250,*251-*254, 251-314, [20] pages. With a fold-out map of the island of Barbados and thirty inserted woodcut plates (numbered and bound in this order: 1-9, X*, 11-23, 25, 27, 24, 24, 28-29). Woodcut chapter headings, initials, and endpieces. Contemporary full leather with gilt spine titles and five raised bands. All edges sprinkled red. Binding worn and abraded. Corners exposed. Unfortunately, a former owner or librarian has strengthened both joints with strips of black cloth tape running the length of the spine, covering most of the spine gilt and raised bands. Minor foxing to text. Small portion of the top corner of L1 torn away. Some offsetting from the plates to facing pages. Overall, a very good copy, which formerly belonged to the Donald Angus Collection at the Pineapple Research Institute of Hawaii.

"The book is handsomely printed, and the plates are finely executed from drawings by Ehret..." (Sabin 33582).
