First Grant edition. Two large octavo volumes. [xii], 298, [2, blank]; xii, [304] pages. With 320 illustrations (mostly in color), engraved from the author's paintings inserted throughout (including one fold-out map). Publisher's decorative full maroon cloth, elaborately titled and stamped in gilt and black, each volume with the rare original dust jacket. Jackets worn, chipped and torn, with tape repairs, several newspaper articles affixed to front endleaves and half-title of volume I. Text slightly over-opened in a few places. Bindings quite bright. Overall, a near fine copy in jackets (jackets are rare in any condition). This edition is widely considered to be the finest edition published after the first edition of 1841.
