First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in volume I on the front free endpaper: "To Mr. Davidson. / With compliments of / The Author. / Geo. Catlin. / 1848." Two octavo volumes. xvi, 296; xii, 336 pages. Complete with twenty-four plates inserted throughout, with small text slip inserted facing page 302 in volume II, and with one ad leaf inserted at the rear hinge of volume II. Publisher's full brown cloth, boards decoratively ruled and paneled in blind, front boards with gilt central decoration of Catlin shaking hands with a Native American, spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Both volumes rebacked preserving the original spines, spines uniformly sunned, some rubbing, soiling and bumping to boards, bookseller's tickets to front pastedowns, front pastedown of volume I has a small dealer's description affixed, small inkstamp to rear pastedown of volume I and verso of title-page of volume II, hinges repaired, rear pastedown of volume II is later, sticker residue on rear pastedown of volume. Some minor occasional foxing in text. Still, a very good copy with a rare presentation. Sabin 11533.
