The First Printed Account of the Astoria Enterprise

Gabriel Franchère: Relation d'un Voyage a la Côte du Nord-Ouest de l'Amérique Septentrionale dans les Années 1810, 11, 12, 13, et 14. Montreal: C. B. Pasteur, 1820. First edition. Approximately 8.25 x 4.75 inches. Octavo. 284 pages. With half title. Contemporary calf, rebacked in unsophisticated early calf. Front free endpaper excised. Author's name in contemporary ink hand (but not his autograph) on half title. Small unobtrusive label adhered to upper fore-corner of half-title. Minor paper repair on title page, text unaffected. Some scattered foxing. Overall a good copy. In a half morocco backed cloth clamshell box.

Franchère sailed from New York in 1810 and spent 1811-1814 at Astoria. He returned overland through Canada and settled in Montreal. He provides the only firsthand account of the massacre of the crew of the Tonquin on the Northwest Coast, as related to him by the native interpreter who was the sole survivor, and who escaped after being held captive by the Indians for two years. Streeter calls Franchère's narrative "the first printed account of the overland journey back from Oregon to the east through Canada." A British edition published in 1854 is a fairly common book, but this original Montreal edition has become rare. This copy contains the half title, "a particularly scarce feature" (Eberstadt).
