Description

    First Edition of Frederick Douglass'
    "True Life Story"

Frederick Douglass. My Bondage and My Freedom. New York and Auburn: Miller, Orton & Mulligan, 1855. First edition. Octavo. 464, [8, publisher's ads] pages. Three tissue-guarded engraved plates, including the frontispiece, taken from the famous daguerreotype of Douglass. Publisher's embossed brown cloth with gilt spine titles. Worn at the edges and corners of the boards, with some chipping and loss at the top and bottom of the backstrip, and at the fore-edge corners. Damp stains to the upper spine and boards, continuing internally to the sheets and endpapers, and most evident on the top portions of the engraved plates including the image area. Previous owner's neat ink stamp on front free endpaper. Overall, still a good copy with yellow coated endpapers, joints and hinges intact.
My Bondage and My Freedom is the second of Douglass' three autobiographies that together chronicle one of the greatest lives in American history.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
