"The engaging narrative, which reads like
delightful fiction, was his actual experience..."

Francis Parkman, Jr. The California and Oregon Trail: Being Sketches of Prairie and Rocky Mountain Life. New York: George P. Putnam, 1849. "First edition, much prized by collectors and superior to subsequent issues...the charm of Parkman's diction still remains. The engaging narrative, which reads like delightful fiction, was his actual experience, as he accompanied the expedition." (Cowan).
