    Description

Edward Everett (1794-1865, American Politician, Educator and Orator). Autograph Note Signed. [Washington]: 28th January 1853. Written in manuscript from the Department of State (he was interim Secretary of State after the death of Daniel Webster). Complying with an autograph request. On plain white paper. Approximately 4.5 x 6.5 inches. With a red wax seal beneath his signature, and a small embossed stamp in the upper right corner. Upper left corner torn away, with some minor loss of text, toned, two vertical creases, some offset from seal from when this document was folded. Very good. Everett was the featured speaker at the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg in 1863; he spoke for two hours just before Abraham Lincoln delivered the two-minute Gettysburg Address (a performance which Everett greatly admired).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
