An Excellent Album of Lithographic Views
of Virginia Before the Civil War

Edward Beyer. Album of Virginia; Or, Illustration of the Old Dominion. [Richmond]: Edward Beyer, 1858. First edition. Oblong folio. Tinted lithographic vignette title-page and forty color tinted lithographic plates after Beyer by Rau & Son in Dresden and A. v. W. Loeillot in Berlin. Rebound in full black morocco with decorated title label laid on front cover. Bookplate of: "Gordon M. Jones, M.D./ Falmouth/ Virginia" on front pastedown. Boards lightly rubbed and scuffed, rear board with small surface chips and light soiling, title label slightly chipped at edges. Front end papers with two vertical creases. Foxing in and around image areas, which is more heavily concentrated on seven plates; some damp staining in the borders, and few small edge tears. Title page and last plate have been silked, addressing an extended vertical tear across the title page's image area, paper loss in the inner margin of the last page, and other paper tears or minor losses; creating a light opaque cast over both pages, otherwise in good condition. This album includes beautiful illustrations of Harper's Ferry, the High Bridge near Farmville, The Tapestry Room in Weyers Cave, Burner's White Sulfur Spring Shenandoah, a View from the Peak of Otter, the Viaduct on Cheat River, B & O. R.R., the Hot Springs of Bath County, and many more.

    More Information:

"Edward Beyer [1820-1865], a German artist, came to Virginia in the mid-1850s and remained in the commonwealth for three years, spending most of his time sketching and painting in the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Valley region, which offered him a rich variety of landscapes for reproduction in his Album of Virginia, a popular folio volume of forty lithographs. The Description of the Album of Virginia that accompanied Beyer's plates [which is not present in this lot] (and was probably written by Samuel Mordecai) includes the following information about the approach to the bridge:

It is approached along the James River, through a country, which, in beauty and grandeur of scenery, is unsurpassed even by the loveliest portions of the Rhine Land. One is environed by towering Mountains, whilst everywhere --above, around, beneath - is the interminable Forest. In truth, for many, many miles you pass through a Gallery of Pictures, most gorgeous and varied."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
