Currier and Ives. [Darktown Series]. Salesman's Sample Book. New York: Currier and Ives, 1879-1890. First issue prints. Forty-one color lithograph prints, some hand-colored and heightened with gum arabic, on heavy paper. Oblong folio (13.25 x 17.25 inches; 336 x 437 mm). Forty-one sheets. Bound in half green morocco decoratively stamped in blind with four raised bands with gilt rule, over boards in dark green pebbled cloth. boards rubbed at edges with some fraying to cloth; boards lightly worn. Prints a touch thumbsoiled at margins with occasional spots of foxing. Near fine. Housed in a black clamshell case.

A remarkable collection of Currier and Ives prints from the "Darktown" series, one of the company's best sellers, likely compiled as a salesman's sample book. Depicting an array of negative stereotypes associated with African Americans and other racist content, these prints illustrate in vivid detail the ugly racial attitudes of the American middle class in the post-Civil War era. Many of the prints in this album are signed Thomas Worth, a long time staff artist for Currier and Ives. Artist John Cameron is also thought to be a contributor to the series.
