Description

The Illustrated Text Volume and the Rare Atlas for Perhaps the Greatest Work on the Grand Canyon

Clarence Dutton. Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1882. [2], xiv, 264 pages. Illustrated with two chromolithograph views after W.H. Holmes, four heliotype plates after photographs, and thirty-six other plates including a color double-page map, many other double-page charts, and views after Thomas Moran and H.H. Nichols. Quarto. Later full brown cloth with copper spine titles. A few tiny paper repairs to the fore-edge of the first couple of leaves. Internally very clean. Very good. [with:] Clarence Dutton. Atlas to Accompany the Monograph on the Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District. Washington: Julius Bien, 1882. Complete, with the Title leaf and List of Sheets (comprising Sheet I), and twenty-two additional double-page sheets, constituting maps and views of the Grand Canyon. Original cloth with gilt titles to front board. A gorgeous production. Minor shelf wear. Four-inch vertical tear at the bottom edge of the front blank and title page. Most sheets have a short vertical tear to the bottom edge, most not extending to the image. A few sheets have small areas of paper adhesive abrasion, where facing pages once adhered to each other at spots. Noticeable dark staining to the bottom corners, just touching the image areas of some plates. Small fore-edge stain near the top corner, not affecting any image areas. Two gift inscriptions to the front pastedown. Hinges partially detached. A good copy. Overall, a rare offering of both the illustrated text volume and the atlas, usually not found together.
