First Edition of Stedman's Account of the American Revolution

Charles Stedman. The History of the Origin, Progress, and Termination of the American War. London: Printed for the Author and Sold by J. Murray, et al., 1794. First edition. Two quarto volumes. xv, [1], 399, seven maps; xv, [1], 449, [1], [13] index, [1] pages, eight maps. Contemporary full tree calf, rebacked with renewed corners. Hinges strengthened. Each volume lacking half-title. Minor tears to folding maps, at stubs. First map in Volume I with paper backing. Pages lightly toned with a tiny bit of scattered foxing throughout. Two leaves lacking small portion of lower corner. Housed in custom cloth chemises and slipcase. A handsome set of this important work, in very good condition.

According to Sabin, this is "generally considered the best contemporary account of the Revolution written from the British side." Stedman was born in Philadelphia of English parents and educated at William and Mary College in Virginia. Stedman, a Loyalist, served under Howe, Clinton and Cornwallis. He was twice captured and sentenced to death as a rebel but escaped on both occasions. The maps accompanying this work are fine plans of the important Revolutionary engagements, and are considered by some to be the best maps of the war.
