DescriptionAlexander de Humboldt. Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain. New York: I. Riley, 1811. First American edition. Translated from the original French by John Black. Two octavo volumes. cxv, [1, blank], 221; 377 pages. Though the title page indicates this edition contains maps, in fact no maps or other illustrations were issued with this edition. Contemporary leather with titles stamped in gilt on red morocco spine labels. Howes writes that the work is "of superlative California importance."
Condition: Good. The bindings are moderately scuffed, especially along the edges and are generally fragile exhibiting tender hinges and some loss at the spine ends. The leather is rather dry and dusty. The contents are moderately browned but the text blocks are sound and tight. Contemporary library ink marks on the title page of each volume. Small library labels mounted on the front pastedown of each volume.
