    Description

Alex Haley. "Mr. Muhammad Speaks," Carbon Typescript with Manuscript Corrections. With letters from editors at The Reader's Digest. New York: 1959. Original proof and unpublished correspondence. Typescript, eleven numbered leaves with added insert and cover sheet. Accompanied by three signed letters addressed to Haley from Charles W. Ferguson, Senior Editor, and Clarice Fontaine, Associate Editor, both of The Reader's Digest. Thirteen letter-sized leaves (11 x 8.5 inches; 280 x 215 mm.) and three leaves of Reader's Digest letterhead (7.5-10.5 x 7.25 inches). Text on rectos only. Three loose typewritten and signed letters, one of which has a holograph note on verso with a suggested addition to Haley's article. Stapled packet consisting of cover sheet, eleven numbered carbon typescript leaves (heavily annotated in pencil with holograph corrections), and one added insert. Housed in custom brown leather-backed marbled paper-covered clamshell; spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. Slight edge wear, rumpling, faint mailing creases to letters; rust stains at top corners from paperclip; mild toning to edges and soiling to versos of creases. Packet lightly toned with age; very mild edge wear; soft creases running vertical length of all leaves with scattered spots of foxing, thumbsoiling; some rippling, dimpling of individual leaves. Clamshell edge-worn, corners gently bumped. Very good overall. The article, a profile on Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation of Islam from 1934 to 1975, includes Haley's first impressions of Malcolm X, who he describes as "Muhammad's tall, whip-smart assistant" and "an ubiquitous Aide-de-Camp who flies about the United States counseling city and territorial ministers." Haley would go on to collaborate in the production of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, published over five years after this article, following the assassination of Malcolm X in 1965.
